The Lateral Root

Network

A Community Advisory Committee

for Fireweed Food Hub

WHAT IS THE LATERAL ROOT NETWORK?

The Lateral Root Network is a community advisory committee for Fireweed Food Hub.

It is a space for representatives from the many different sectors of the broader food community to come together and provide feedback and guidance over the work we are doing through the Food Hub. Furthermore, inspired by our namesake plant, the fireweed, we wish to extend our roots as an organization to build stronger connections within our community to fuel the ongoing work we are all engaging in of creating positive change in our food systems!

WHO CAN APPLY?

The Network will consist of three stakeholder groups: food producers, food security advocates, and people working in the food service industry. Anyone representing these groups and who has an interest in the work of Fireweed Food Hub is welcome to apply. LRN members must also become members of Fireweed Food Co-op. If cost is a barrier, Fireweed will gladly provide a membership at no cost.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

The Lateral Root Network will meet four times a year:

  • Once with folks in the food service industry

  • Once with food producers

  • Once with folks working in the food security sector

  • Once all together in one group to share and connect

In other words, members will attend two meetings per year: once in a small group with others in your sector, and once in the large group with everyone together. We will also provide ongoing feedback opportunities throughout the year! Members are asked to commit to the LRN for one year, after which they can choose whether to commit to another year-long term.

IS THERE COMPENSATION?

Members will be offered a $100 honorarium per meeting. (Meetings will be approx. 2 hours in length). The honorarium is intended to compensate members who are participating in the LRN on their own time, and/or to address barriers some members might otherwise face to participating in the LRN. While it will be offered to all members, its acceptance is optional.

HOW ARE MEMBERS SELECTED?

Members of the LRN will be selected from applicants by a committee comprised of Fireweed staff, board, and committee members at large on the basis of balanced representation, and the applicant’s involvement in the local food system. We will give priority consideration to applicants with lived experience of food insecurity.
